This investigation, based on a sampling of on scene data from the GIDAS (German In- Depth Accident Study) database from the years 2004–2013, focusses on the comparison of elderly versus young pedestrians in traffic accidents with cars and trucks in Hannover and Dresden, statistically weighted for the national accident situation in Germany. For the study the analysed cases are split into four different age groups: 15–30 years, 55–64 years, 65–74 years and >74 years. The accident configuration parameters i.e. location of accident, time of day, moving direction of the pedestrians before impact, impact speed of the vehicle and human related parameters such as age groups and accident causation factors. ACAS (Accident Causation Analysis System) is analysed regarding their influences for the injury severity and injury frequencies.
The major influencing parameters are analysed by statistical methods of descriptive statistics. The aim of this study is to analyze the accident characteristics of young and elderly pedestrians in the traffic accident scene, to identify similarities and differences and finding countermeasures for injury avoidance and reduction in injury severity.
