Simulation programs are becoming increasingly important in accident analysis and accident reconstruction. One such simulation program is PC-Crash. It is able to calculate vehicle dynamics as well as collisions. The focus of this paper is the modeling of steel guardrails in PC-Crash in order to represent and calculate accidents with guardrails in a more differentiated way and with higher quality. Traffic Accident Research at the Technical University Dresden (VUFO) has created three models for different types of guardrails using the possibilities of PC-Crash in the course of a project with the association for quality control “Stahlschutzplanken eV”. These models were created and validated using real impact test data, generated according to DIN EN 1317. The limitations of the models were determined and demonstrated using various real accident scenarios. With the current models it is not yet possible to represent over- or under-riding or run-through of guardrails. Considering these conditions, the use of these models enables to depict collisions at various steel safety barrier systems in a more differentiated and realistic way regarding the collision dynamics of the vehicle and the deformation behaviour of the guardrail.
