Luty, W.: The μ-PW friction tester - a new device to assess the value of tire-road friction coefficient at tra
The main target of this paper is to present a new measuring device named “μ-PW Friction Tester”. Review results of portable friction testers have been presented. In the case of portable devices, there are generally indirect methods, using rubber sample. The rubber sample is slid over the road surface under set normal load. It is obvious that in such cases the measurement results should be correlated with a tire friction coefficient to the road surface. It is very important to provide appropriate measurement conditions but in addition there are many other features of friction tester which make it especially useful in application to assess the friction coefficient between vehicle wheels and road surface in traffic accident scene. Those features have been described. Basing on them, the basic assumptions for building of μ-PW Friction Tester have been presented. A design and operation of that tester has been shown. The protocol of measurement and sample measurement results confirming the properties of the tester has also been shown.
