The European Association for Accident Research and Accident Analysis was founded in the year 1991 by the German accident analyst Prof. Dr. Heinz Burg in order to improve the standards and the position of accident analysts.
The first Annual Congress was held in Vienna in 1992.
The Annual Congresses have developed since that time into an important educational event for accident analysts throughout Europe.

In the 90-es of the last century the association was managed directly from its former headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany. Due to the constantly growing number of members in Europe, the association had to be restructured in the year 2000.
EVU now consists of an umbrella association with the international headquarters in Graz, Austria, as well as of individual country groups.
Every European country can establish such a country group, and many countries of the European Union, as well as Switzerland and Israel have already done so.

Today EVU counts more than 1000 members from around 30 countries worldwide.
EVU aims to promote the improvement of accident research and the improvement of the methodology of accident analysis, as well as to contribute to an increased legal security in the process.

EVU further aims at the improvement of traffic safety by publishing information on the unfolding of accidents, and, by using the knowledge gained from the unfolding of actual accidents, to derive concepts for the improvement of road safety.

At the time being, EVU-activities within the EU in Brussels and Strassbourg are the necessary introduction of "Event Data Recorders (EDR)", the establishment of an "European In-Depth Accident Study (EIDAS)", then the present urgent problem in Europe concerning the "Negative Performances of Imported Tyres" and the latent problem with "Securing Accident Data on Digital Tachographs".

EVU carries out its own researches or takes part in suitable European accident research projects.
Members appointed by EVU contribute to national and international expert panels.
EVU makes every effort to support international cooperation for further development of science and research in the field of road traffic safety and accident analysis.

The association is also committed to the harmonisation of training and to permanent education for the future.

EVU works together with the authorising and certifying bodies at international levels and promotes the European standardisation of the accident reconstructionists professional profile.

One main goal of the work of the European Association for Accident Research and Accident Analysis (and also a goal of every years Congress) is the further material training and the intensive exchange of experience in the area of international research and analysis on accidents.

The association holds an ordinary members meeting every year, called General Assembly, which always takes place in the framework of an Annual Congress.
This congress is held in a different member country each year.

The official language of EVU is English, with translations in all European languages, if demanded by the country groups.

The organs of EVU are the Board of Directors, the Presidential Council and the General Assembly.
The Board of Directors comprises the Chief Executive Officer, his deputy, the treasurer and the secretary as well as the chairmen of all country groups.
