Modern safety features in vehicles, e. g. advanced driver assistant systems like ABS, ESP, ACC, lane departure warning systems or automatic emergency brakes assist the driver especially in dangerous situations, thus compensating for mistakes by the driver. This is a huge potential to significantly contribute to accident avoidance and crashworthiness. To optimise this potential, the number of vehicles with these systems has to be increased, while on the other hand the original safety level for vehicles has to be maintained over their whole lifetime. To achieve the latter, the inspection of electronically controlled safety functions using specific test methods is included in the German Periodical Technical Inspection (further referred to as PTI) since April 2006.
