The number of cars with ESP (electronic stability program) is steadily rising. Thus, it becomes more and more important to model such systems in accident simulation programs. Only with the help of an appropriate ESP module in a simulation program the actual vehicle behaviour can be reconstructed and conclusions on the actions of the driver can be drawn. When applied in practice, ESP influences vehicle dynamics in a complex way. This article presents experiments using different vehicles with ESP both turned on and turned off; the test vehicles were equipped with a tri-axial accelerometer. Furthermore, the drivers’ actions were documented. In a second step, the article presents simulations of these experiments using the program PC-Crash with an ESP module. The results are then compared to the real driving behaviour of the test vehicles.
