EVU 2014 Copenhagen BergThe objective of this article is to offer updated insights into accidents, in particular those involving heavy goods vehicles. This also assumes that the many different types and categories of vehicles are fully taken into account. Furthermore, space is given to an overview of the applicable driver assistance systems and the minimum requirements contained in statutory provisions. From this information, we then derive an assessment of the general potential of advanced driver assistance systems.

As a starting point, evaluations of official statistics provide both an overview and some details about the development of the overall numbers of vehicles registered and their involvement in accidents. Additional information can be gleaned by evaluating indicators collated uniformly throughout Germany in road traffic accident statistics. This information can then be further extended and researched in depth through detailed analysis of individual cases. The FAT working group AK 22 (Safety of commercial vehicles) will pursue a multilayer approach to these investigations.

The issue will then be consolidated in the two follow-up talks “Commercial vehicle accident analyses of an OEM and derived results” and “Driver assistance systems aimed at improving road safety in line with European regulations”.
