Partner protection is a key issue in current vehicle safety developments. A lot of effort is put into enhanced vulnerable road user protection and improved compatibility of passenger cars. It therefore seems logical to extend this philosophy to heavy goods vehicles. Hence, the EC funded project APROSYS addresses two accident constellations: Heavy goods vehicles vs vulnerable road user accidents and passenger cars hitting the side of the truck or trailer. The report shows typical scenarios, boundary conditions and injuries in heavy goods vehicles vs vulnerable road user accidents. Finally a vision should be defined, how the design of heavy goods vehicles will/has to change under the paradigm of enhanced partner protection.
