The number of vehicles in daily traffic equipped with ESP is continuously increasing. In the same way the forensic analyst is confronted with accidents where the vehicles had an ESP system. Sometimes specific questions about the correct function and the influence of ESP on the movement of the vehicles before, during and after the accident arise. To answer these questions a deeper knowledge of the way ESP influenced the movement of a vehicle in a specific situation has to be gained. This paper presents numerous sliding tests where the vehicles were instrumented with sensors similar to the vehicle sensors ESP uses for control. Each test was performed once with ESP switched on and once with ESP switched off and the differences in vehicle dynamics are discussed. In the second part of the paper the ESP simulation model in PC-Crash is presented. The simulation results are compared with the test data and limitations of the model are discussed.
