This opening speech describes the development of automobile technology beginning at the end of the 19th century and the first safety measurements at the start of the motoring era. All important inventions concerning active and passive safety are mentioned and described and their consequences for driver and vehicle are analysed. The intensive development of safety features starting in the fifties of the last century up to today’s most innovative electronic safety devices and assistance systems is described. The impacts of these systems on the improvement of safety on our roads in Europe are analysed and discussed.
