Wales suffers from a high number of motorcycle fatalities, most of these occurring on Saturdays and Sundays. Riders of high powered motorcycles travel hundreds of miles on the challenging and uncluttered roadway system. Newer machines are relatively inexpensive within the context of the power that they are capable of producing. Compared to the rest of Europe, U. K. motorcyclists purchase a higher proportion of sports-orientated machines which bring about speed, experience and judgment related issues. This paper examines rider skills when compared with the types of motorcycles involved in these incidents and an examination of the tyres fitted to them. It further examines the age group of the riders involved, and the overall impact of “born again bikers”. An association is made between on-scene assessments, prevailing weather conditions, forensic evidence of mechanical issues, and the skill level required by the riders involved. Several case studies are presented, and overall conclusions are drawn.
