Accident reconstruction in cases where occupants were ejected and killed is a complex task, even
if only one vehicle is involved. The most important question in such cases is: Who was the driver?
It is important for the police to know the needs of the accident investigator and to understand the
basic reconstruction principles. It is essential to record the situation at the accident site as well as
the damage to the involved vehicle. 3D laser scanning at the accident site allows a detailed evaluation
of the topological situation. Obstacles and the main contact areas with the terrain and the related
damage on the vehicle have a high importance when carrying out a temporal and spatial reconstruction
of what happened.
The combination of classical forensic methods (micro trace examination, DNA analysis, morphological
evaluation of damage details and/or injuries) to prove physical contacts between two “bodies”,
and the numerical methods of up-to-date accident reconstruction with accurate 3D data, allows an
efficient and thorough approach in accident analysis.
